Choosing questions worth measuring

Build a question set that reflects the expertise, audience, and geography you care about.

Start with a real decision

The strongest questions resemble the questions a potential client asks when deciding who to contact. They are more useful than broad questions about a whole industry.

Make the scope clear

  • Topic: What expertise should the answer cover?
  • Audience: Who is looking for help?
  • Geography: Does a city, country, or market change the answer?
  • Format: Is the person looking for a consultant, specialist, speaker, or another kind of professional?

Examples

  • Which independent product strategists help B2B software teams in the United States?
  • Who should a founder speak with about pricing strategy for a new product?
  • Which performance marketing consultants work with European ecommerce teams?

Questions to avoid

Avoid questions that only ask whether an engine knows your name. They can be useful context, but they do not show whether you are recommended for the work you provide. Avoid stuffing several unrelated services into one question.

Keep the baseline

Do not silently replace your questions after changing your profile. Keep the saved set for a rescan. If you change it for a new direction, the new results remain useful, but they should not be read as a direct comparison with the earlier scan.
